Concord

If you haven't heard of Concord, MA you probably are not an American Revolutionary War buff! To the outside world, Concord symbolizes devotion to liberty, intellectual freedom and integrity of rural life. To its current residents, (pop. 17,669 in 2010), Concord is a beautiful place to live and a desirable bedroom community to Cambridge and Boston. It retains its semi-rural character through aggressive planning, zoning and protection of historic and natural resources. Through the added protection of its 5 local historic districts, Concord preserves its rich inventory of historic architectural styles which imbue the town with its special sensibility. The public schools are excellent: 3 elementary schools (K-5: Alcott, Thoreau and Williard), Concord Middle School (gr. 6-8), and Concord-Carlisle High School. There are a couple of well-known private schools as well.  In 2015, the median single family sold price is $964,500 for 150 properties sold.

For more background info about Concord, it was established in 1635, the first official "interior" town of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and was probably chosen for its proximity to Boston (20 miles) and Cambridge (15 miles), making it a favorite bedroom community for residents with jobs in either city. There are 3 major rivers located within its 25.9 sq. miles: the Assabet, the Sudbury, and its namesake, the Concord.  Concord is famous for its part in the Revolutionary War, where on the Old North Bridge over the Concord River on April 19, 1775 "the shot heard round the world was fired."  This quote is attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson, one of Concord's literary residents and leader of the Transcendental movement of the mid-19th century. Other influential resident authors, educators and editors were Henry David Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Monument Square and Sleepy Hollow cemetary bear witness to the impact of the Civil War on Concord.  An interesting factoid, the now ubiquitous Concord grape was first introduced by Ephraim Bull in Concord in 1849.
